the benefits of being rich
There are now around 10 million people in the world who have at least $1 million in assets (2008).
Their combined wealth is around $40 trillion.

These are rich people! Of course some are significantly better off than others, $1 million is not that much money these days!
The 'credit crunch' might have affected some of them, especially in the short term. Their wealth might appear to decline and there are certainly some whose riches will disappear into thin air!
But the majority are in a good position to weather the 'credit crunch' and to buy assets and property at really low rates. They will be even richer in a few years time once the world has recovered from the current financial mess.
Being rich brings a certain type of freedom to most millionaires and billionaires. They are free to simply do what they want, when they want to do - subject to the laws of the country that they are in of course.
Very rich people don't have to go through the same concerns that most of us have to when they want to buy something expensive. We have to work out whether we have the money, whether we can afford to spend it, whether other bills will be unpaid if we buy what we want, etc.

A very rich person simply has to decide that they want to buy something and it is theirs!
I suspect that this is what ordinary people are envious of, not the amount of money that rich people have, but the freedom that they have to buy anything that they desire.
